La ingesta de alcohol puede llegar a producir cambios en la química cerebral, es decir, afecta al comportamiento, al pensamiento, sentimientos y emociones. Esta serie de cambios pueden llegar a producir cambios emocionales no tan buenos, como lo son la depresión, ansiedad, inclusive la agresividad.

- Pérdida de memoria.
Consumir alcohol puede producir deteriores mínimos en el hipocampo. Sin embargo, el deterioro se manifiesta a través de lapsos en la memoria, las cuales se presentan después de algunas horas de haber consumido pequeñas cantidades de alcohol.
- Impulsividad.
Al consumir alcohol en pequeñas o grandes cantidades, las conexiones del córtex prefrontal del cerebro se interfieren. Esta zona en particular es la encargada de mediar la impulsividad y la organización de la persona. Cuando el nivel de alcohol en sangre aumenta, la persona experimenta comportamientos impulsivos, que en otras situaciones no hubiera llevado a cabo.
A largo plazo:
- Trastornos mentales.
El consumo excesivo de alcohol está ligado al desarrollo de ciertas enfermedades mentales, tales como la ansiedad y la depresión. Esto se debe, a que el alcohol altera los niveles de serotonina del cerebro y en medida que el consumo aumenta, tiende a disminuirlos. Manejar niveles bajos de este neurotransmisor, aumenta la probabilidad de padecer trastornos emocionales de gravedad.
- Destruye neuronas.
Altas dosis de alcohol impide el crecimiento de nuevas células y reduce el número de neuronas del cerebro en ciertas áreas de este. Además afecta al desarrollo del cerebro a edad temprana y otras repercusiones si no se toman las precauciones necesarias, podrían tener serias conciencias.
