Su libro “Sleepy Hollow”, apegado a los códigos estéticos del movimiento romántico es el que configura el mito. La historia que escribe Irving es la de Ichabold Crane, un erudito que enamorado de la hija mayor de una de las familias más pudientes del pueblo llamado “Sleepy Hollow”, trata de cortejarla en un baile. Antes de pedirle matrimonio, Ichabold escucha todos los relatos de fantasmas y sobrenaturales que supuestamente ocurren ahí, entre ellos, el de la leyenda del Jinete sin cabeza. Tras ser rechazado por la mujer, Ichabold se monta en su cabeza y cruza el tenebroso bosque a medianoche. Al siguiente día encuentran su caballo, su sombrero y una calabaza aplastada.
Su legado en el mundo cultural
Ha sido tanto su impacto en el mundo pop, que hay un sinfín de referencias, películas animadas, cómics, discos y series que han tocado el tema del Jinete sin cabeza. Es una de las leyendas con más poder en Halloween y en varios pueblos de Norteamérica se hacen excursiones a los bosques simulando la búsqueda del endiablado jinete.

Según Ronald Pitcavage, académico de la Universidad de Stanford, la leyenda del Jinete Sin Cabeza estuvo fuertemente ligado con la guerra de secesión de los Estados Unidos. El Jinete sin cabeza representaba los traumas del pasado y las heridas de la barbarie que se cometió en esa disputa y se insertó en el consciente colectivo. Esto le concedió al Jinete su estatus de ente infernal que venía por personas inocentes, en vez de su papel original de la mitología celta y germana donde advertía de peligros o se llevaba a los que cometieran pecados capitales.
