El estrés forma parte de nuestro día a día. No es algo que podamos evitar o tratar de eliminar por completo de nuestra vida, porque simplemente es imposible. Varias investigaciones afirman que pasar por un momento de estrés puede ser positivo hasta cierto punto, pues el cerebro aumenta su mecanismo de defensa y se protege frente a las amenazas. Sin embargo, cuando el estrés lo sufrimos de manera excesiva o crónica, puede afectar gravemente nuestra salud, en una amplia variedad de formas.
Una estadística que asusta, pero que ha sido confirma la Organización Mundial de la salud (OMS) es que el 75 por cierto de los mexicanos padece estrés y esto, pone a México por delante de China y Estados Unidos
Un estudio realizado por la Universidad de Rosalind Franklin, descubrieron que un evento estresante puede matar neuronas en el hipocampo. Esta zona cerebral, está asociada a la memora, las emociones y el aprendizaje.
Una investigación realizada por la Universidad de California, encontró que padecer estrés crónico puede provocar cambios a largo plazo en el cerebro. Descubrieron que el estrés crea más celular productoras de mielina, pero menos células de lo normal. Este descontrol en ciertas áreas del cerebro, interfiere con la sincronización y el equilibro de diversas áreas cerebrales.
Por si fuera poco, también puede afectar a la memoria espacial, como también la capacidad de recordar información sobre la ubicación de algún objeto y a la orientación en el espacio.
