Actualmente de los 12 millones de adultos mayores que viven en México, el 80% lo hace en condiciones de pobreza y abandono. Y 16% de los adultos mayores, sufre algún grado de abandono y maltrato, según datos brindados por el Consejo Nacional de Población (Conapo).
Es por eso, que debemos tener muy en cuenta las opciones que pueden funcionar, tanto para la familia, como para la persona al cuidado. Pedir ayuda a profesionales o llevarlos a un asilo de ancianos, puede parecer insensible para algunos, especialmente a aquellos que pertenecen a familias muy unidas, aunque muchos sostienen que es más insensible dejarlos solos en casa, que dejarlos en un asilo.
Hay muchas razones por las que las familias optan por casas de cuidado de ancianos, en lugar de tomar el cuidado de sus padres y adultos mayores. Una de las razones más comunes, es la falta de tiempo, ya que la mayoría de las personas trabajan, algunos tienen hijos y se dificulta el cuidado del familiar. Además del tiempo, la persona mayor en algunos casos, necesita un control médico especial, atención y medicamentos, lo que podría dificultar aún más la situación y por ende, implicaría más tiempo de cuidado.
Por otro lado, si tu decisión es hacerte cargo debes tener en cuenta ciertos puntos antes de tomar esta responsabilidad. A continuación, te damos algunos consejos.
¿Qué es lo mejor para los adultos mayores?
1.- Incluso si se tiene la intención de cuidar a nuestros padres cuando envejezcan, si no se tiene el tiempo, ¿para qué angustiarse? Lo que también es importante en el cuidado de alguien mayor que está enfermo, es calificación y experiencia. Pueden necesitar de alguien que conozca más de medicamentos y tratamientos e incluso primeros auxilios.
3.-Otro factor importante en la toma de decisiones es si se tiene el dinero para pagarlo o no. Recuerde que los asilos de ancianos no son baratos. Pero si simplemente no tiene mucho tiempo de sobra, siempre puede optar por un cuidador que lo ayude mientras está en el trabajo. Esta alternativa es mucho más barata que un asilo.
Algo que debes tomar en cuenta
Sin embargo, es bien sabido que el ser humano va cambiando según la etapa de vida en la que se encuentra, esto a raíz de las transformaciones que se presentan a nivel fisiológico, pero no sólo eso, sino también por intereses sociales y de desarrollo personal y profesional y se considera que una persona tiene una buena calidad de vida cuando el aspecto de salud, intelectual y social, están cubiertos.
En el caso específico de lo que ocurre en la tercera edad, los cambios físicos que se presentan con el envejecimiento reducen las capacidades físicas y mentales llevando en la mayoría de los casos, al adulto mayor a un aislamiento, por lo que resulta indispensable adoptar medidas encaminadas a conservar su salud, reducir riesgos de accidentes, atender enfermedades existentes y en medida de lo posible evitar el desarrollo de nuevos padecimientos, así como propiciar un entorno de integración y comunicación donde se sienta cómodo.
