La familia García está alistando maletas y afinando los últimos detalles para el viaje hacia la ciudad de Guadalajara. Han esperado este viaje por meses y se les facilita un poco más, por que tomaron la decisión de irse en su propio automóvil. El señor García prepara el automóvil, verifica el estado de las llantas, llena de agua el tanque del radiador y se prepara para emprender el viaje.
Durante las primeras horas de camino, todo va normal, se mantiene una velocidad prudente de aproximadamente 100km/hr. Conforme van pasando las horas, el tráfico de carros aumenta y la velocidad sube hasta 170km/hr. Se percatan que los frenos no responden y entran en pánico.
En nuestro país, cada hora se registran alrededor de 297 accidentes automovilísticos, el 30% de estos, se deben a fallas en el vehículo, entre ellos, los frenos, según datos de la Dirección de tránsito Nacional.
¿Qué hacer cuando los frenos no responden?
- Usar el freno de mano.
- Apagar el motor.
- Poner el automóvil en punto muerto (Neutral).
- Usar el freno de mano
Tirar del freno de mano puede parecerte la forma más viable cuando los frenos no responden. Sin embargo, cuando activas el freno de mano, bloqueas las llantas traseras y eso provoca que el carro se arrastre sin control, y aunque consigas mantener la velocidad y trates de orillarte hacia el acotamiento, las irregularidades del mismo, pueden provocar volcamientos o un terrible accidente.
- Apagar el motor
A una velocidad de hasta 170km/hr apagar el motor, tal vez no sea la mejor idea. Esta acción podría bloquear el volante, reduciría un poco la velocidad, pero no podrías cambiar la dirección del automóvil y estarías teniendo un accidente fatal.
- Poner el automóvil en punto muerto (Neutral).
¡Bingo! Al desconectar la trasmisión, estarías desconectando los engranajes que van del motor a los ejes. Aunque el motor seguirá funcionando, evitarás que siga acelerando. Ejerce una presión constante en los frenos y el automóvil irá perdiendo velocidad progresivamente puesto que el motor no hace funcionar el eje de trasmisión.
Este terrible episodio de pánico se podría haber evitado si el conductor acostumbrara a realizar los controles necesarios que requiere un automóvil. Eso es fundamental, aunque sea vehículo nuevo. Así mismo también se deben evaluar el estado de las luces del automovil, niveles de aceite del motor y frenos, inclusive la posición de los espejos retrovisores.
