Todo mundo habla del estrés, decimos que es el origen de muchas enfermedades, el gran mal de este siglo, la conclusión de todos nuestros problemas y también la justificación ideal de nuestros deslices. Se sabe que el estrés es un conjunto de procesos que se dan en nuestro sistema como consecuencia de la necesidad de adaptarnos al medio que nos rodea. Ciertos cambios fisiológicos y de conducta, nos ayudan a responder a las situaciones que percibimos como amenazadoras.
Sin duda el estrés es vital en situaciones de supervivencia como correr, luchar, brincar, etc. Este sobreesfuerzo nos ayuda a enfrentar los desafíos que se nos presentan, pero, en una sociedad donde no puedes correr y los desafíos sociales o profesionales son constantes, nuestro cuerpo, que no está preparado para el estrés crónico, tiene efectos secundarios.
Situaciones causan el estrés
Los factores que comúnmente activan el estrés son: frio, calor, ruido, conducir, etc. Hay algunos un poco más constantes y dañinos como lo son: conflictos laborales, apuros económicos, conflictos con la pareja, etc. Y las más asociadas con enfermedades o trastornos mentales por su extensa duración son: pérdida de trabajo o casa, accidentes de tránsito, pérdida de un ser querido, etc. Sea cual sea la situación, la respuesta fisiológica ante los diversos acontecimientos es la misma, debido a la necesidad del cuerpo y mente para adaptarse al cambio.
Los efectos a corto plazo del estrés suelen ser: dolor, daño de órganos, insomnio, infecciones, dificultad respiratoria, tensión muscular, ansiedad, falta de concentración y de apetito, nerviosismo, sensibilidad, exceso de toxinas, etc. Los efectos a largo plazo: migraña, problemas de apetito y digestión, disfunción de órganos dañados, problemas cardiovasculares, trastornos emocionales, enfermedades mentales, entre otros.
Para reducir el estrés se recomienda
1. Dormir lo suficiente
Sentirse cansado aumenta el estrés. Regular el ciclo de sueño en horas adecuadas (6 a 8 horas), sin que este sea alterado por factores exteriores, nos permite descansar, lo que es indispensable para poder evitarlo.
2. Tener una dieta saludable
Un cuerpo que obtiene sus recursos necesarios para abastecerse y a partir de alimentos saludables, está preparado para enfrentarse al estrés.
3. Moverse
El ejercicio físico, por lo general, aquellas actividades en la que tu atención esté enfocada en tus movimientos y sensaciones, además de reducirlo, ayudan a que nuestro sistema nervioso encuentre su equilibrio.
4. Organizarse
La creación de escenarios probables, positivos o negativos de situaciones de estrés, quitando el factor sorpresa y resolviendo conflictos antes que se proyecten en la realidad. Organización, autocontrol, poner límites, saber decir no, tomar decisiones y no aplazar los problemas, suelen ser factores determinantes para reducir el estrés.
5. Tiempo de relajación
La meditación, yoga o algunas técnicas de respiración, ponen al cuerpo en un estado de relajación, que es lo opuesto al estado de estrés.
6. Comprometerse socialmente
Al relacionarnos o mantener una simple conversación con otra persona, nuestro cuerpo libera hormonas que reducen el estrés o incluso, que pueden sacarte de una situación realmente estresante.
